Dinefwr Castle near Llandeilo
We recommend Dinefwr to all our holiday cottage guests, aside from the above is a wonderful landscaped estate and a superb period house.
Dinefwr is a National Nature Reserve the only designated parkland NNR in the whole of Wales because of its woodland is home to some of the oldest trees in Britain. It has rare breed white cattle, a 12th-century Welsh castle, historic house and 18th-century Landscape Park, enclosing a medieval deer park
The ruins of Dinefwr castle occupy an impressive position above the Tywi water meadows to the west of the site. Dinefwr was the capital of Deheubarth, then West Wales, and a stronghold of the ruling Princes of Wales. The castle was a ruin by 1523, and is being restored by Cadw (Welsh Heritage).
There are wonderful views from the castle walls over Dinefwr Park and down over The River towy Valley, it is easy to see the superb strategic location of the castle.
There are sign posted walks from the car park, to the castle around the Dinefwr estate, and Castle Woods nature reserve.
Car parking is £3 for the day in the National Trust car park on the estate. Entrance to the grounds, the Castle and Castle Woods nature reserve is free. The visit the house is extra.
