Claerwen Dam near Elan, is the last and biggest of the local dams to be built.
It was opened in 1952 by the newly crowned Queen Elizabeth and created a reservoir which holds almost as much water as the total of the three earlier dams built in the Elan Valley.
The dam is 184 ft (56 m) high and 1167 ft (355 m) long. The Claerwen dam was built in concrete, but in keeping with the appearance of The Elan Valley dams it was faced with dressed stone at considerable extra cost in materials and labour.
