Rosebush, near Maenclochog, Ceredigion
SA66 7QU (Sat Nav)
Rosebush is one-mile north of Maenclochog in Pembrokeshire, Wales.
The village owes its origin to the large slate quarries immediately to the north on the slopes of the Preseli Hills. The Maenclochog Railway, linked the quarries with the main line railway at Clunderwen.
The Preseli Hotel and 'pleasure gardens' with fish ponds, was built in the late 1870s in an attempt to attract tourists on the railway,it still survives. The hotel is now Tafarn Sinc, and the fish ponds are a feature of the nearby Rosebush Caravan Park. There is also a bistro and bar in The Old Post Office and Pant Mawr Cheeses a fantastic farm shop where you can pop in, have a coffee and sample their cheeses.
Slate quarrying has long since ceased but tourism is once again at the heart of the village economy. The old quarries are very scenic and are just a short walk from the village.
Pantmaenog Forest near Rosebush has recently been open to the public and has over 12km’s of walking, mountain biking and horse riding trails. Rosebush has direct access to the great walking on the Preseli Hills. Tracks within the plantation provide circular walking routes. The following link details a 4.8 mile, 2-hour circular walk starting at Rosebush, through the quarries & forest, up to the Golden Road track over the Preseli highest peak Foel Cwmcerwyn
