Strata Florida Abbey is a beautiful, and historically important site

Strata Florida translates from Latin simply as the Vale of Flowers. It is in an impressive setting with wonderful views and a large sculpture made of railway sleepers on the overlooking hill.

The Cistercian monks of the Middle Ages were quite the entrepreneurs. They sought wild and lonely places to practise their religion but, and used this rural location near Tregaron to amass vast amounts of land to farm thousands of income-generating sheep.

Strata Florida quickly became a site of huge religious significance in Wales and a natural home for Welsh culture. Dafydd ap Gwilym, one of the best known of Wales’s medieval poets, is buried here under a yew tree.

The majesty of the huge carved west doorway gives an appreciation of how impressive the Abbey was. The plan of the church can still be seen and some of the original richly decorated tiles from the abbey are still intact. One of them, ‘Man with the Mirror’, depicts a medieval gentleman admiring himself in a mirror!
