Bwlch Nant yr Arian

A Forestry Commission visitor centre situated high above the Melindwr (Watermill) Valley with panoramic views of Cardigan Bay and The Cambrian Mountains.

Bwlch Nant yr Arian became a red kite feeding station in the winter of 1999. It was designed to give the small numbers of red kites a helping hand and to encourage them to gather together, a natural pattern of behaviour for kites.  These days 100’s of kites gather for up to 2 hours prior to feeding.

The kites are fed daily, 2pm in the winter and 3pm in the summer, every day of the year including Christmas Day. They are fed off cuts of beef from a local butcher. Approximately 10kg of beef is scattered out on to the grassy feeding area on the lakeside. The red kites swoop down to pick a piece of meat and eat on the wing.

The red kites are mostly local birds. It is estimated that they may come from about a 10-mile radius to feed.

Nant yr Arian means the silver stream and further up the valley are the remains of the old lead and silver mines that once brought prosperity to the area.

The Café is open 7 days a week (Closed Christmas & Boxing Day) 10am - 5pm: Our hot food is served between 10am and 3pm daily
