Walking the Ceredigion Coastal path, West Wales. 4: New Quay to Cwm Silio

Holiday cottage owners Mick & Julie's New Year's resolution was to walk the 60 mile long Ceredigion Coastal path in sections during 2013. The idea is to be able to advise holiday cottage guests how best to enjoy coastal walking holidays from Stallion Valley holiday cottages and to make regular entries on The Stallion Valley holiday cottage blog.

On Tuesday 19^th February we tackled the 3.5 mile section from New Quay to Cwm Silio beach along with our 3 dogs.This section has some wonderful scenery, and offers various circular walks:

4, 6 and 8 mile options.

We parked in the large pay and display car park (with toilets) on your right as you enter New Quay. The weather was dry, sunny and cold so we set off wrapped up warm with the dogs straining on their leads.

From the car park we turned left along the road and then first right down a lane, then left onto a footpath through the church yard and up the hill turning left on a footpath providing good views over New Quay.

The route carries follows paths, tracks and minor roads via Byrlip Farm to a hidden valley, Cwm Soden, managed by the Nation Trust.The path turns left through woodland above the Soden River. Gradually the valley opens up and below you can see the river flow out over Cwm Silio beach.

The Ceredigion Coastal path skirts the beach and we turned right, north, to follow the path back to New Quay. The path is steep in places especially at Cwm Coubal.About a mile from New Quay we came to a wonderful look- out point at the site of the old coastguard station, an ideal spot for a picnic. Below is Bird Rock an important breeding place for seabirds, guillemots. razorbills, kittiwake gulls and fulmars.

The path carries on providing wonderful views of New Quay. Below on your left is a fish factory, which processes shell fish for export. Further along is South Beach, the quay, Harbour Beach and then Cei Bach Beach which runs all the way to Cei Bach point and beyond. Today we did not see seals or dolphins but they are often spotted from the cliff tops at New Quay.

On a clear day from here you can see all the way along the coast to Aberaeron, Aberyswyth and up the Snowdonia and North Wales.

We enjoyed our walk, wonderful views, varied terrain and some steep climbs. It was good to go home for a late lunch and tick off another 3 miles, 14 down 46 to go.
