Last year’s goslings return

Last year the pond at the bottom of our farmyard was turned into a nursery for families of mallards, tufted ducks and Canada geese. A great, sometimes noisy bird watching spectacle for our holiday cottage guests.

This was the first time we have had nesting geese. They were fantastic parents closely guarding their four young goslings and we think they also played a part in protecting the duck families. Most years not all of the ducklings survive but last year they did.

Last week our peace was shattered by the arrival of 6 honking geese landing on the pond. We are sure it is parents and offspring returned having survived the winter. The young now look almost as big as their parents but not half as cute as in this photo from last year.

here has been no sign of nest building yet, we will keep our fingers crossed.
